Appliances that work alongside braces

Brackets and wires move teeth within an arch. These are the tools used when the problem is bigger than that — width, jaw relationship, anchorage, or space that needs holding.

  • Palatal expanders

    Widens a narrow upper jaw

Used for crossbites and constricted arches, most effectively while the midpalatal suture is still responsive.

  • Elastics

The part that depends on you

Small rubber bands worn between the arches to correct how the upper and lower teeth meet. Nothing else in treatment depends so completely on the patient.

  • Temporary anchorage devices

A fixed point to pull against

Small titanium mini-screws that let teeth be moved without dragging others along in the opposite direction.

  • Functional appliances

    Growth modification in children

Herbst, twin block and similar appliances used to influence jaw relationship while a child is still growing.

  • Space maintainers

Holding room for an adult tooth

Placed when a baby tooth is lost early, to stop neighbouring teeth from closing a space that a permanent tooth still needs.
