Debond day

Brackets are removed with a plier that flexes the bonding adhesive rather than pulling on the tooth. It feels like firm pressure and a click, and it is not painful. The remaining adhesive is polished off, the teeth are cleaned, and a scan or impressions are taken immediately for retainers. Expect teeth to feel unusually smooth, slightly sensitive for a day or two, and for the front teeth to look longer than you remember because the brackets are no longer breaking up the surface.

If any white marks have developed under the brackets, this is when they become visible. Many fade over the following months as saliva remineralises the enamel; deeper ones do not, which is the whole reason for insisting on hygiene during treatment.

Most patients finish with a bonded wire behind the lower front teeth and a clear retainer on top, which is a practical combination of insurance and flexibility.

The wear schedule, and the honest version of it

Full-time wear for the first several months, then nights only. And then nights only, indefinitely. Teeth drift throughout life — this happens to people who never had braces too — and the fibres around teeth that were rotated or moved a long way retain a pull toward their old position for years. A night retainer is the difference between a result that holds for decades and one that softens within eighteen months.

Retention is not the end of treatment. It is the maintenance the treatment was always going to require.

At this practice, retainers and the first year of retainer checks are included in the quoted treatment fee. If a retainer is lost or broken, tell us quickly rather than waiting — a replacement made within days fits, and one made within months may not.
