My teeth look straight. Do I still need braces?

Sometimes yes, and sometimes genuinely no. The difference is whether the problem is what the teeth look like or what they are doing.

Alignment is the front row. Occlusion is everything else

What you see in a mirror is the labial surface of six upper teeth. What an orthodontist examines is how thirty-two teeth meet through the full range of jaw movement. Those can diverge sharply. A person with a visibly attractive smile can have a deep bite where the lower incisors strike the palate, a crossbite loading one side unevenly, or a molar relationship that concentrates force on two teeth doing the work of six.

When a straight-looking bite is worth treating

  • Uneven wear. Flattened or chipped edges on particular teeth mean force is being distributed badly. Enamel does not grow back.
  • A deep bite marking the palate. Lower teeth biting into tissue behind the upper front teeth causes recession over years.
  • Crossbite. Even a single tooth in crossbite can shift how the jaw closes and strain the joint on that side.
  • Recession on one or two teeth. Often a sign of a tooth positioned outside the bone envelope, taking force it was not built for.
  • Bite-related jaw discomfort. Where jaw symptoms track with how the teeth meet, correcting the occlusion can improve them.
  • Before restorative work. Building crowns onto a poor bite means rebuilding them sooner.

When the answer is no

Plenty of people have mild imperfections that are stable, comfortable, wearing evenly and causing nothing. Treating those is optional and should be presented that way. If a consultation cannot tell you what specifically would improve and what happens if you do nothing, you have not been given a reason to proceed.

The right question is not whether your teeth could be straighter. It is whether anything is being damaged, and whether you would choose to change how they look.
