Stopping treatment early
The one situation where partly finished is meaningfully worse than not started. There are almost always better options than disappearing.
Why partway is worse than not at all
Orthodontic treatment moves through stages, and the intermediate positions are not stable resting places. Teeth are commonly tipped deliberately during alignment so their roots can be uprighted later; a case abandoned at that point leaves teeth leaning in positions they would never have adopted naturally. The bite may be temporarily worse than at the start — open where it was closed, or meeting on fewer teeth than before. Spaces may sit half closed. And without retainers, everything drifts from wherever it was left.
Why people stop
Finances change. Families move. Someone loses patience in month twenty of a case that was quoted at eighteen. Occasionally a medical situation intervenes. All of these are real, and none is improved by simply not coming back.
What can actually be done
- Payment restructuring. Tell us before falling behind. Schedules can often be extended, and this is a conversation we have regularly.
- An early finish with a defined endpoint. Where the main objectives are achieved, treatment can sometimes be brought to a deliberate close short of ideal — teeth settled into a stable bite, appliances removed properly, retainers fitted. That is a legitimate outcome. It is completely different from abandonment.
- Transfer. If you are moving, we prepare records and a treatment summary for the next orthodontist. See transferring mid-treatment.
- A pause with appliances removed safely. Rarely ideal, occasionally the right answer during a medical event. Done properly it includes retainers to hold the current position.
If something has changed, say so at your next visit. Nearly every version of this situation has a managed path through it, and the only outcome with no good options is the one where nobody is told.
Find out what your teeth actually need
A first visit is complimentary. You will get an honest answer about whether braces are the right tool for this bite, what it would take, and what it would cost — with no obligation to start.
