A week of soft meals after bonding

Chewing is tender for three to four days. Here is a week of real food rather than the usual advice to live on yoghurt.

Days one and two: nothing that needs biting

  • Breakfast: scrambled eggs, porridge, smoothies with banana and nut butter, Greek yoghurt.
  • Lunch: tomato or squash soup with soft bread torn into pieces, mashed avocado, cottage cheese.
  • Dinner: macaroni cheese, congee, dhal with rice, mashed potato with slow-cooked meat, poached salmon.
  • Snacks: apple sauce, pudding, ripe banana, ice cream — genuinely useful for the ache, not just morale.

Days three and four: soft but substantial

  • Risotto, soft polenta, ramen with the noodles cut short.
  • Flaked white fish, meatballs in sauce, shredded chicken in a soft tortilla.
  • Well-cooked vegetables: carrots, courgette, cauliflower, sweet potato.
  • Pancakes, French toast, soft cheese and crackers softened with soup.

Days five to seven: back to normal, cut smaller

Most patients are eating close to normally by now. The permanent change is not what you eat but how: cut it up and chew on the back teeth rather than biting through anything with the front ones. Sandwiches quartered, apples sliced, corn off the cob, chicken off the bone.

Protein matters more than people think

Teenagers in particular tend to drop protein intake sharply during a soft-food week because the easy options are carbohydrates. Eggs, Greek yoghurt, dhal, tofu, flaked fish and protein added to smoothies keep it up without any chewing.

What to keep out of the trolley for the whole treatment is on what you can and cannot eat.

Find out what your teeth actually need

A first visit is complimentary. You will get an honest answer about whether braces are the right tool for this bite, what it would take, and what it would cost — with no obligation to start.
